The front disc brakes are controlled by a single piston that moves the calipers. On models equipped with rear drum brakes, the brake shoes are actuated by dual-piston service brake cylinders and a self-adjusting brake pedal system. On models equipped with rear disc brakes, a single piston moves calipers similar to those used on the front brakes. On all models, the handbrake is cable operated and provides an independent mechanical way to apply the rear brake.
The hydraulic brake booster is of conventional vacuum type on direct steering models or hydraulically actuated on power steering models. The system pressure for the hydraulic booster is produced by the power steering pump and is contained in the pressure accumulator. The pressure accumulator is used by the hydraulic booster unit when the brake pedal is depressed. Anti-lock braking system (ABS) can also be installed as a base or additionally on request, according to the model. You will find more detailed information regarding this system in the relevant Chapters of this Section.
Warning: On models equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) Take some extra precautions when working on the brake system Chapter 28 before performing any action described in this Section.
